Supplements. To take or not to take?

This is the age old question many people are always asking themselves. Sadly, with all the terrible supplements, misinformation and misleading studies, many people still believe supplements are useless, unnecessary or even bad for you! While it’s true many supplements are terrible and the companies are simply trying to profit by selling tainted, weak or potentially harmful supplements, this is not true for ALL supplements. Being in the all or nothing camp is very dangerous.

Each supplement should be looked at separately from all others when deciding what to take and what company to buy from. It’s important to talk to natural health care practitioners about what to take, the dosage and where to buy it. Many doctors would agree it’s important to take Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Omega 3’s, multivitamins and more… but are all brands created equally? NO! Cheaper brands will package their vitamins with weak unpure ingredients to attract more buyers because the price is so low. Have you ever wondered why some brands charge more money for the “same” vitamin? Sometimes it’s just greed but often it’s because the ingredients are more pure, more potent and simply cost more to produce!

Before buying a supplement, one should do their due diligence on the effectiveness of the supplement (researching the scientific studies) and researching the brand. Having sold fish oil in the past I can tell you there are dozens of varieties of fish oil and most of them are NOT worth your money. Fish oils take many different forms and the costs vary greatly. Paying a bit more for a wild salmon fish oil will provide you with so much more nutrient value compared to your weak supermarket brands. Same goes for multivitamins, vitamin c, probiotics and many many others.
